1080p content and upscaling were consistently fine, but 4K HDR was definitely a problem. I had it for a couple months and for the life of me could not find out why I would get stuttering during a movie.
I think it's worth mentioning that people have also reported issues with direct play/streaming 4K HDR content from a Plex server to the non-pro device. Locked into the Apple ecosystem though.which may or not be desirable for others. As a bonus, the Firestick 4k max supports YouTube HDR which NO shield supports since the hardware doesn't support VP9.2 decoding. I ended up buying a Firestick 4K max as a user suggested and I can confirm it can play every single one of my 4K h265 HDR content from Plex and Kodi perfectly with no hiccups. Here is a very recent post by a user on Reddit with the exact issues as me and with others confirming these issues as well: If you google Shield TV 4k freezing you'll find tons of users reporting this. I had a tube TV that worked perfectly on launch but as of early this year Kodi and Plex freezes, stutters, and flat out locks up the entire shield when playing 4k content. These are videos I used to be able to play as well. Now 99% of my 4k content stutters and lags the whole system to the point where you need to unplug it.

The tube recieved an update over a year ago that broke 4K. I'd would have said the apple 4k latest but av1 support doesn't happen till a14 bionic.ĭon't buy the tube, buy the shield pro. But for subscription based streaming? None of those are supported by subscription based content providers to merit to include it as a streaming device requirement. The real bonus for the shield is plex server ai upscaling and truehd audio. The best streamer today.would go to the 4kmax with av1 support and working autorefresh rate switching without external app to do it. The most powerful set top streaming soc and gpu is the latest apple 4k a12 bionic soc/gpu but the eco is pretty closed. The cube tho has built in ir blaster with bt support to make any avr now bt remote controlled with even alexa. the shield has the better gpu in the tegra x1. The sony x800h/x900h have more powerful socs than the shield in those tv's. The cube instead runs an a73/ a53 combo and thats more powerful. the shield runs a variant of the 2012 a57 soc paired with lower clocked a53. The cube has the more powerful soc than the the shield. The shield is not the all in one ideal internet based streaming device anymore so perhaps just don't market towards streaming as its main niche would be a smarter direction to take in the future. The fire cube might be good for some people's needs, which is why I said it depends what you need it for.įuture proof without av1 or vp9.2 for 4k across streaming and cloud gaming? Thats not the direction that google and netflix are taking so its not future proof if it lacks both.
I can't remember what else, but a quick read of a review of either device will let anyone know if it's better for them or not. It also gets great support from Nvidia, and can do things like Atmos audio in Disney+ and Netflix, as well as 4k upscaling of 1080p content that is supposed to look really good. I don't know all the details of the fire cube, the the Shield will almost certainly have more powerful hardware and will be better for future proofing. But shield has an ap that can work around it.

Its fixed to gui on other androidtv boxes after android 9. Atleast for androidtv tho its the only one left that supports in some factor the ability to change the refresh rate.
From subscription based streaming uehd audio isn't used to merit it hence why its not included.

The shield is still the only sold set top that supports truehd audio which the others don't pay the license to do it. the best was the apple4k latest(netflix autorefresh works) but the 4kmax beats it now with av1 support. Its however without argument.the worst at streaming as it doesn't support the codecs for 4k across all the popular subscription sites. Its the best android based local playback device and at arm based gaming.

I know the Pro model can, and I assume this one can as well. I've had one for years and would recommend it over any fire device any day.Īlso, if I'm not mistaken, it can play Dolby Vision files (in Plex). Depends what you need it for, but the NVidia Shield is basically the best quality streaming device out there.
